Service Engineer I

Summary

Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence is seeking a Service Engineer I to support customers from a home-based location in or near Greensburg, Indiana. This field-based role requires frequent regional travel to customer manufacturing sites and is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and related precision measurement equipment.

Manufacturing Intelligence focuses on manufacturing technology, providing production software, inspection and quality solutions that help customers accelerate innovation, drive productivity, make better products and improve quality of life for all.

This is a hands-on customer-facing role for someone who enjoys technical problem-solving, working independently, learning complex equipment, and delivering reliable service in dynamic manufacturing environments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, troubleshoot, calibrate, and perform preventive maintenance on CMM systems and related equipment at customer locations.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, computer, and software-related system issues using established procedures and sound troubleshooting practices.
  • Use hand tools, measurement equipment, and basic electrical test equipment to identify root causes and complete corrective actions.
  • Apply technical training, service documentation, and product knowledge to resolve customer issues efficiently and accurately.
  • Provide customers with clear technical guidance on equipment operation, routine maintenance, and service-related questions.
  • Document service activities accurately and complete service reports, expense documentation, and other required records in a timely manner.
  • Partner with technical support, engineering, scheduling, and other internal teams to resolve complex or recurring service issues.
  • Manage assigned service activities and travel schedules while maintaining effective communication with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Deliver a high level of customer service and represent Hexagon professionally at customer facilities.
  • Participate in ongoing technical training and retain knowledge across a broad range of current and legacy equipment.
  • Travel up to 100% based on customer demand, primarily Monday through Friday, including overnight travel as required.
  • Work a minimum of 40 hours per week and overtime as required to meet customer needs.

Qualifications

Required

  • Located in or near Greensburg, Indiana, with the ability to travel frequently to customer sites throughout the assigned region.
  • Technical school, associate degree, bachelor’s degree, military technical training, or equivalent practical experience in electronics, industrial mechanics, mechatronics, maintenance, or a related technical field.
  • Typically 1–2 years of related technical service, equipment maintenance, repair, manufacturing, or similar hands-on experience; equivalent education and technical training will be considered.
  • Hands-on experience using common hand tools and basic electrical test equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating systems and standard Microsoft Office applications.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic, and software-related problems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to follow established procedures while recognising when additional support or escalation is needed.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with a customer-service mindset.
  • Ability to organise work, manage changing priorities, and perform effectively with limited day-to-day supervision.
  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to meet the travel requirements of the role.

Preferred

  • Experience servicing, maintaining, or operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), CNC equipment, industrial automation, or other complex electromechanical systems.
  • Experience in a field service or customer-facing technical support environment.
  • Familiarity with equipment calibration, preventive maintenance, or precision measurement processes.

This role is primarily field-based and is performed at customer manufacturing and industrial worksites.

  • Frequent travel, including driving and air travel, with overnight stays based on customer needs.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and work around industrial equipment.
  • Regular use of hand tools, computers, test equipment, and precision measurement equipment.
  • Regularly lift and/or move equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity is required for tool use, keyboard use, equipment handling, and service activities.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent communication with customers, colleagues, and technical support teams.
  • Noise levels and environmental conditions vary by customer facility; appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided or required as applicable.
